FOCUS STACKING & BRACKETING WITH OM-D
Every autumn, in the forests near my home, a massive reproductive event takes place that I just can't ignore. It starts during the warm days of summer when long tendrils of mycelium digest their way through the rotting corpses of fallen forest detritus. When autumn arrives, an asexual explosion erupts from the earth, as the fruiting bodies strive to spread their genetically identical spores throughout the forest floor. We're talking mushrooms here, people! And I love to photograph them.
For my test of focus stacking, I held the camera as steady as I could, had image stabilization engaged, and tried to avoid slow shuttler speeds increasing the ISO as needed. For the sample shots below, the focusing step was set at 3. In each pair of shots, the first is a normal fixed focus, the other the stacked composite. The only real downside I can see to the focus stacking feature in the camera other than if you want the background to be blurry is the cropping that's apparently inherent to the in-camera focus stacking method. II works well. I knew about focus stacking of the traditional sort, but the idea of having to set the camera on a tripod, manually setting the focus at various focal lengths, and using specialized software to combine the images didn't appeal to me. I actually own a high end tripod, but I hardly ever use it.
Focus Bracketing shifts the focus and lets you set the number of shots
