Jerichos War by Gerald Seymour

Unfortunately a bit of a fizzer this one, offered nothing new for the genre. The author used to be an auto buy for me because I loved his earlier work. There were issues with plot development and the characters just felt flat, not a great deal of character development. There was a lot of repetition on offer here plot wise and with the characters themselves. The early part of the novel was confusing and took ages to develop I felt that Id read this novel before. On the positive side I did like the setting. Read some of the earlier work and give this one a miss,

Jericho's War

This is a story about a group of distinctive individuals, men and women, who place themselves in danger in a nerve-racking convergence on a strip of land of no real importance in Yemen. We meet the leading character in this story before this adventure begins. He has become legendary as a result of an heroic and successful escape attempt from a situation in the same area where, captured by Arab jihadists, he awaited his execution. Badly wounded in one leg he hobbled the long miles to freedom. He is the warrior that all admire. But then he is sent back into the same hell-hole accompanied this time by a sniper and his second.

In a moment of nerve shredding suspense that will affect many thousands of lives, a handful of men and women will converge on a barren stretch of Yemeni desert. Each of them will need spirit, courage and immense luck. Each of them will need spirit, courage and immense luck to survive the next forty-eight hours.

Reviews Richly imagined characters and a brilliant ending mark this story, about an operation to halt a Yemeni plane bomb plot, from an ever-reliable writer. Discerning thriller readers can safely say that the best practitioner currently working in the UK is the veteran Seymour. He is, quite simply, the most intelligent and accomplished in the current field.

With his younger counterparts shunning the recent conflicts in Yemen, Seymour, 75, displays typical adventurousness by stepping into the breach. Anxiously following it are their desk-bound bosses in London, with a team in New Mexico also observing developments as they operate an American drone hovering over the Middle East.
