The Truth About "A Streetcar Named Desire" Dr Duke Pesta and Stefan Molyneux

A Streetcar Named Desire

Stella tells Stanley that she is taking Blanche out for dinner and a show while he has his poker game at the apartment. He is annoyed because he has to eat a cold plate which Stella placed in the ice box. She tells him that they have lost Belle Reve and that Blanche is upset and it would help if Stanley could admire Blanche's dress. But Stanley wants to return to the loss of Belle Reve. He wants to see a bill of sale or some papers. He reminds Stella of the Napoleonic Code which states that anything belonging to the wife belongs also to the husband.

A Streetcar Named Desire , written by Tennessee Williams, is about the conflict between two opposing forces, the traditions of the Old South and the urban, and working class. It is a play that embodies the social events and changes that occurred at the time. Stella is surprised but concerned because she is married to Stanley Kowalski, who prides himself on seducing Stella away from her aristocratic backgrounds. As Blanche settles in, however, Stella appears to be more concerned with the well being of Blanche than with satisfying Stanley. This leads to a conflict between Stella and Stanley, and eventually leads to Stanley beating her up out of rage. He later begs for her forgiveness at her doorstep, and Stella passionately takes him back.
