There’s No Wrong Way: 30 Children’s Books About Non-Traditional Families

As you might know, I have a ton of family photos. Yesterday, I walked into class and all the photos were hung up on the wall, next to watercolor paintings that the kids had made to represent their families. The families were of all different colors and sizes, but the one constant was that everyone was smiling and huddled in close with the ones they love. At the same time, these stories are just as important for kids with more traditional family structures, because it gives them a window through which they can learn about kids with different life experiences. This is how we nurture empathy in our little ones! At school, a child is hesitant to tell her classmates about her family.

The idea of the traditional nuclear family is becoming less and less of a defining factor for many families. In fact, less than half US children are even raised in traditional families in which their parents are two heterosexual adults in their first marriage. In order to better reflect the changing dynamic, there are more and more children's books for non-traditional families being published. While many may consider Dr. Seuss books to be the best books you can read to your kids , exposing children to diversity at a young age can help them grow into accepting and open-minded adults.

The broad meaning of "family" is a focal point of the kindergarten curriculum at Mazzy and Harlow's school, which I think sets the tone for both.

As children start to identify with the stories they read, it can be isolating when they do not have any books that mirror their own day-to-day lives. Fear not!

Children love to see something of themselves and their families as they read. When growing up in a family that is everything you need, but not the expected mom and dad with 2. Here are some picture books and easy readers to share with some young readers about a variety of families. The Family Book by Todd Parr Represents a variety of families, some big and some small, some with only one parent and some with two moms or dads, some quiet and some noisy, but all alike in some ways and special no matter what. There are many more kinds of families, and many more books about how wonderful each is. My list is not comprehensive, there is no way to include every good book on the subject. If I missed a great one you have run across please share it in the comments so we can all check it out!
