Readings about the Social Animal by Elliot AronsonIt might be surprising that I gave this book 3 stars, considering the lone 1 star and deep criticisms I gave to the book it supplements: The Social Animal, Ninth Edition by the same author, Elliot Aronson. However, it is important to compare the purposes of each book.
The Social Animal (TSA) is meant to be a primary text on the subject of social psychology and in that it is utterly inadequate. Readings about the Social Animal (RATSA) is meant to be a collection of key research studies in the field of social psychology that exemplify the terms and theories and it is successful in its goal.
Aronson compiled a truly enlightening set of cases. The cases themselves are so interesting, in fact, that they are great to read without the main text (TSA). However, I cannot give this book more than 3 stars because:
A) This book is certainly not enough to compensate for all of TSAs shortcomings. My social psychology professor took the initiative to define all the terms that the main book did not.
B) While Aronson compiled the research papers included in this book, the papers are ultimately the work of other researchers. One could not give credit for songs to a DJ who just plays them in an appealing order; accordingly, giving any more stars would unduly credit Aronson for the works of innovators who produced the studies.
C) This book is not as helpful to readers who do not know how to read research papers so its usefulness is limited by how much the reader already brings to the table.

Originally published in , The Social Animal is currently in its eleventh edition. In a style written for the general audience, the book covers what modern psychology knows about the reasons for some of the most important aspects of human behavior. Aronson begins the book by citing a number of scenarios, real and constructed — reactions to the Kent State shootings , the Stanford prison experiments , and a four-year-old boy given a drum set among them — that illustrate a variety of human behaviors seen in real life. The rest of the book is spent primarily on explaining how human minds operate and interact with each other, using these situations as examples. The book covering topics include the causes of prejudice, aggression, and cognitive dissonance.
The lowest-priced brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item in its original packaging where packaging is applicable. Packaging should be the same as what is found in a retail store, unless the item is handmade or was packaged by the manufacturer in non-retail packaging, such as an unprinted box or plastic bag. See details for additional description. A few pages had some writing on it with pen but that was stated on the description. The only issue I have is that if you're a smoker you should've stated that. My book reeks of cigarette smoke and me not been a smoker AT ALL, I don't appreciate the smell of cigarette in every turning page.
