The Outsiders Johnny's Death

Johnny Cade

Johnny Cade was a greaser , one of the three deuteragonists of The Outsiders, and a member of The Gang. He had big black eyes in a dark tanned face; his hair was jet-black and heavily greased and combed to the side, but it was so long that it fell in shaggy bangs across his forehead. He always had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes. Johnny is very quiet, not getting in the way of the gang very often. This is a result of constantly being neglected by his mother and beaten by his alcoholic father. He is able to hold his own at a rumble, but distances himself from the running and common conflict of being a greaser as often as he can manage, this being because of the stigma that follows the greasers. He was nearly killed by a group of socs' one night when he was jumped while walking alone.

Johnny Cade is "the gang's pet. Johnny had been severely beaten by a group of Socs before this story begins. This beating puts him almost over the edge; in fact, the Socs scared him so much that he even carries a switchblade in his pocket. Johnny vows that, "He would kill the next person who jumped him. His parents abuse him both physically and verbally, and Johnny often opts to go anywhere but home.

Poor Johnny has a really rough life. According to Pony, sixteen-year-old Johnny looks like "a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers" 1. When his parents aren't physically and or verbally abusing him, they're ignoring him. Johnny can stay away from home for long periods of time and nobody seems to care or notice, in sharp contrast to Pony's situation. To make things even worse, Johnny was brutally beaten by the Socs last spring and now lives in a constant state of fear and PTSD:. I had never been jumped, but I had seen Johnny after the four Socs got hold of him, and it wasn't pretty. Johnny was scared of his own shadow after that.
