Education is an important part of a person's upbringing. Schooling dominates many peoples' lives for much of their early years. Education is preparation for the future, and therefore it is important to acquire one before it is too late. Education gives people the tools to think logically and reason for themselves. Without education, humanity would not have left the stone age, and this essay would have never been written. However, the most important aspect of education is literacy. Literacy is important because communication skills are otherwise limited to speech, technology becomes unusable, and it is almost impossible to acquire a job.
Literacy is critical to economic development as well as individual and community well-being. Consequently, there is a growing mismatch between the skills that employers need and the skills that workers have. This discrepancy leads to high unemployment coupled with a high job vacancy rate. Our provincial government has stressed that if we do not address our skill shortages, BC will face an ever greater labour crisis. Soon, there will be more jobs than workers.
The aim of the day is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.
