Masonic Education #34 - The Council of Royal and Select Masons
Grand Council of Royal and Select Masons of Maryland
They organised themselves into a Sovereign body under the Patronage of the Rev. Canon G. By the turn of the century there were twenty seven Councils and a similar number Consecrated by the end of the second world war. The Order then grew rapidly with the number on the Roll at the end of being over Councils. The Degrees in the Order - four in total - are often referred to as the 'Cryptic Degrees', and the Order sometimes as 'Cryptic'. Herbert de Losinga was Bishop of Thetford c.
In England and Wales, the degrees are practiced as a stand-alone organisation of Freemasonry while in some other Masonic Constitutions , they form part of the York Rite. These four English councils organized themselves as a sovereign body under the leadership of G. Members wear a jewel and a characteristic apron which is triangular in shape. The Order meets in local Councils, each having an elected presiding officer named the Thrice Illustrious Master, who appoints a number of assisting officers. Councils are grouped into districts, each governed by a District Grand Master, who likewise appoints district officers. The Grand Council in London controls overseas districts in South Africa, the Caribbean, and the Channel Islands, and also controls a few isolated overseas councils in the Isle of Man and across several nations of western Europe and the Far East. The Grand Council exercises control of six degrees.
Welcome to The Grand Council of Royal & Select Masters of Ontario
All have faithfully served communities across our country for more than a century and continue to diligently work to ensure our time honored organization flourishes far into the future and have a direct impact on social matters across the nation. Some of the activities our Grand Councils are involved in at the state level include youth mentoring, supplying food to shelters, family adoptions during Thanksgivings and Christmas seasons, toy give-a-ways, etc. In some of our cities, we have collaborated with other charitable organizations such as the local NAACP chapter, Churches, Safe Houses, and Schools to provide assistance. These collaborations have greatly enhanced the delivery of benevolence to needy families and at risk youths. A third degree or ceremony known as the Super Excellent Masters completes the set of degrees conferred in Cryptic Rite Councils. You began that circle when you received the Symbolic Degrees in your lodge. You continued it when you received the Capitular Degrees in your chapter.
Cryptic Masonry is the second part of the York Rite system of Masonic degrees, and the last found within the Rite that deals specifically with the Hiramic Legend. These degrees are the gateway to Temple restoration rituals or the Second Temple Legend. A Council is similar in many ways to a Masonic Lodge ; it has officers and a ritual degree system, which in this case consists of three degrees: Royal Master, Select Master, and Super Excellent Master. The Super Excellent master's degree is optional in some jurisdictions. The various positions in the lodge are modeled directly after Craft Masonry and though the names are often different the duties are largely the same. Their seating is a bit different, however, in that all three principals of a council sit on the east dais , while the captain of the guard and conductor of the council sit in the west and south.
