Friendship in John Knowles' A Separate Peace

Friendship is exhibited when two people share many common interests, do not turn on each other, and are not envious of each other. Due to the fact that Gene and Finny's relationship does not demonstrate any of these characteristics, they do not have an authentic friendship. In this book it appeared as if Gene and Finny had a genuine friendship due to the amount of time they spent together, yet they were never true comrades. One characteristic of friendship is sharing common interests. Gene and Finny have interests that are completely opposite. On one hand, Gene enjoys and excels at school. Contrary to this fact, Finny enjoys and excels at any activity that requires courage-school didn't contain these characteristics for Finny.

The reader throughout this novel was very entertained. This novel takes place at the Devon Preparatory School in the years of This story begins when Gene Forrester comes back to the Devon School fifteen years after his graduation to relive a tragic story. He walks up to a tree. It was a time of war. In this period of history, people found themselves looking for peace and innocence. Starting out their friendship seems strong and everlasting but as the novel progresses, like all friendships, the fire between them seems to dwindle.

Friendship is one of the most important relationships that people form in all of their lives. Children build bonds when they are young and use those skills to continue fulfilling friendships for the rest of their lives. Throughout A Separate Peace, John Knowles displays the good things about close friendships but also the hardships that often occur.

Allison GonzalezMrs. Friendships can be born in many different ways. Sometimes they develop through family, as family members introduce one another to other relatives and friends. Another way is through church, people who gather and believe in similar things and become closer to one another. Othersfriendships develop through school, having the same class with someone or being someone's roommate. No matter how friendships develop, a good friendship is priceless.

Shortly after Finny's fall from the tree, Gene, consumed by guilt and fear, obeys a strange compulsion to dress like his roommate. He puts on Finny's clothes — even the unconventional pink shirt that was the "emblem" for the Allied bombing of Central Europe — and looks at himself in the mirror. There Gene sees he has become Finny "to the life. Unexpectedly, Gene feels free, daring, confident — just like Finny. For a moment, Gene has become Finny's double. In a sense, Gene and Finny have been each other's doubles since the beginning of the novel. In the first description of the boys standing together by the tree, the narrator makes clear that they resemble each other physically to a remarkable extent.
