A geographic information system GIS is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographic data. GIS applications are tools that allow users to create interactive queries user-created searches , analyze spatial information, edit data in maps, and present the results of all these operations. GIS can refer to a number of different technologies, processes, techniques and methods. GIS can relate unrelated information by using location as the key index variable. All Earth-based spatial—temporal location and extent references should be relatable to one another and ultimately to a "real" physical location or extent.

A geographic information system GIS is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing feature events on earth. GIS technology integrates common database operations, such as query and statistical analysis, with maps. GIS manages location-based information and provides tools for display and analysis of various statistics, including population characteristics, economic development opportunities, and vegetation types. GIS allows you to link databases and maps to create dynamic displays. Additionally, it provides tools to visualize, query, and overlay those databases in ways not possible with traditional spreadsheets.

In order to understand Geographic information systems GIS basic concepts and its relation with the environmental management we need to see what GIS actually means; and will try to put forward some evidence how it can benefits the environmental management. This would be a series of articles explaining brief history, technological aspects, best practices and the practical applications of GIS to understand environmental studies. Google maps and Google earth provided people with the solutions of maps but data interpretation and data preparation was still not included in it, and for high level data analysis and decision making GIS professionals were required. GIS is the science of location based services to know which thing is where and why? The process is to collect data from different sources, displaying it over the maps, later performing spatial analysis on that data which helps in making decisions and predictions.
