The couple insisted that there had been no bidding war and that their announcement had taken ITV completely by surprise. Despite Channel 4 claims that the new show will be "innovative", Madeley and Finnigan, masters of the cosy sofa chat, insisted that they were not about to shock their fans. Their morning show, This Morning, which they hosted for 13 years, brought in millions of viewers and gave them an almost iconic status. Today, rumours are rife that their Channel 4 teatime show Richard and Judy, which is struggling for viewers, could be axed. Strain is showing on the ever-bubbly Finnigan, who was pictured over the weekend looking drawn and exhausted. Their new show has been plagued by problems since it went on air in November.
They are in talks with Channel 4 to present a spin-off series based on the Richard and Judy Book Club, as well as other one-off specials, including the British Book Awards. The announcement comes a week after Richard and Judy turned their attention to children's books with the launch of a youth version of their Book Club. Madeley said: "We are looking forward to making two new series of our show next year. The programme is still full of life, but we have taken the difficult decision to leave it on a high. Finnigan is understood to be looking to wind down her TV work to write books, which could see Madeley go on to pursue a solo presenting career.
