Dreams and Shadows (Dreams & Shadows, #1) by C. Robert Cargill

A brilliantly crafted modern tale from acclaimed film critic and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill—part Neil Gaiman, part Guillermo Del Toro, part William S. Burroughs—that charts the lives of two boys from their star-crossed childhood in the realm of magic and mystery to their anguished adulthoods

There is another world than our own—one no closer than a kiss and one no further than our nightmares—where all the stuff of which dreams are made is real and magic is just a step away. But once you see that world, you will never be the same.

Dreams and Shadows takes us beyond this veil. Once bold explorers and youthful denizens of this magical realm, Ewan is now an Austin musician who just met his dream girl, and Colby, meanwhile, cannot escape the consequences of an innocent wish. But while Ewan and Colby left the Limestone Kingdom as children, it has never forgotten them. And in a world where angels relax on rooftops, whiskey-swilling genies argue metaphysics with foul-mouthed wizards, and monsters in the shadows feed on fear, you can never outrun your fate.

Dreams and Shadows is a stunning and evocative debut about the magic and monsters in our world and in our self.

One step into the dark forest, two steps back–Of Dreams and Shadows review

Sometimes it feels like a game company, in order to really call itself a game company, has to have at least one of these in their game catalogue. However, because of the glut, a game would have to do a lot in order to stand out from the pack. Of Dreams and Shadows, designed by Gordon Alford and published by Greenbrier Games earlier this year, gets points right from the beginning for trying to be unique, especially in terms of theme, style, and narrative. Does the heavy emphasis on horror narratives help Of Dreams and Shadows distinguish itself from the pack? This is a game for adventurers which is easily solo-able by playing two handed. Every player controls one character which will be a familiar variation on warrior, healer, etc.

Really crappy fantasy version of Eldritch Horror. Event cards are poorly done. One event card might be you can't move, or you can't shop. Considering there's very few actions in the game, often times that meant you're doing literally jack shit on your turn. It's poorly designed and it's boring.

If Grimslingers represents all the best that can happen when Greenbriar Games publishes an independent game with high-quality art, this stands at the complete opposite of the spectrum. Of Dreams and Shadows, which I will abbreviate to ODS for the sake of convenience, starts out with a bang that slowly devolves into a whimper the more you dig into the experience.

The feeling of what is real blurs with what people experience in their dreams…and nightmares. - When the world plunges into darkness, any light beam of hope is hard to find.
