Living things respond to their environment Response to stimuli is an important characteristic of life. Anything that causes a living organism to react is called a stimulus plural is stimuli Stimuli can be external or internal. For instance, if you feel like going to the bathroom, it is an internal stimulus that is controlled by the brain.

By sensing and responding to change, organisms keep conditions in the internal environment within ranges that cells can tolerate. An organism cannot survive for a long period, unless it feels the senses and responds particularly to specific stimuli inside and outside of itself. For example: Human beings sweat, when the internal temperature of body rises above a certain point. Temperature and many other factors in the environment must be kept within certain limitation.
