Top 10 Ancient Greek Goddesses

Greek goddesses are good archetypal figures because of their exaggerated personalities. Despite their immortality and similarities to modern day superheroes, they are still plagued with personal flaws and negative emotions which caused destruction in their lives and the lives of other gods and mortals. This page is a list of the Greek goddesses of ancient mythology and will be continually updated with additions, corrections and more information on each of the goddesses. One of the seven, Pleiades and daughter of Atlas and Pleione. She bore several children with the god Poseidon. An early Greek goddess of the sun, daughter of Helios and Rhode, and possibly goddess of the morning. A Greek goddess who was worshipped almost exclusively at a single sanctuary on the island of Aegina in the Saronic Gulf.

Most of us are well aware of the heroics of the ancient Greek gods. But the goddesses from ancient Greek mythology are no less important in terms of popularity and symbolic significance. Just like the Olympian gods, most of the ancient Greek goddesses resided in the realms of the heavens above Mount Olympus though there were quite a few exceptions too. Goddesses had special powers and could control specific aspects of life. From the motherly Rhea who dared to trick her own husband to save her children, to the queen of gods Hera or the goddess of wisdom Athena who was much revered by both gods and mortals, the ancient Greek goddesses were as much of a divine force to be reckoned with as the gods were.

A number of younger Kharites presided over the other pleasures of life including play, amusement, banqueting, floral decoration, happiness, rest and relaxation. The Kharites were attendants of the goddesses Aphrodite and Hera. The three Kharites were depicted in classical art as naked women, holding hands and dancing in a circle. They were sometimes crowned with and held sprigs of myrtle. Homer, without giving her any other name, describes a Charis as the wife of Hephaestus.
