Garth Pig and the Icecream Lady by Mary Rayner

I think this is probably my favourite book about the Pig family. Its actually as old as I am! As such, its a little bit dated in places (and slightly politically incorrect in others). But the basic premise is still sound, and its a fun story in which the Pig siblings must once again outwit the wily wolf.

Its baffling that nobody clues in about the wolf until its too late. There are so many clues! Shes hairy, for one thing. She drives a Volfswagon truck. Her business is called Lupinos Icecreams. Hello?! Wolf!

But shes not the sharpest wolf, either, and the Pig siblings (usually led by Sorrel, the eldest) are able to come out on top.

This book clearly shows that its not a good idea to get into a strangers van, and kids will probably spot the danger even before Garth steps all the way inside. I also like the fact that the piglets still pay for their ice cream; just because the person selling it is a homicidal maniac doesnt mean its okay to be a thief.

One day, I hope I can find the rest of the books about these pigs and read them, too. For now, though, Ive exhausted Open Librarys collection. Its been a fun day of reading and reminiscing with this porcine family unit!

Quotable moment:

Quick, said William. Stand in a circle everyone, and he began to count round:

Ham, bacon, pork chop,
Out you must hop.

Mrs. Pig held up her trotters in horror and turned away her eyes. Goodness me, where do they pick up such words? I am sure they have never heard them in this house.

Then, it spun off into a wildly popular farmers market stand selling Vietnamese sandwiches and noodles far beyond the usual banh mi and pho. Last year, it materialized in bricks and mortar on King Street in Chinatown, and the crowds followed. Most of the attention is focused on the Pig, and sometimes the Lady gets a mention. All while running the restaurant kitchen and cooking Andrew. The Les closed it and sold everything to make money and time for The Pig and the Lady.

Great food and service. Came in an hour and a half early; was seated immediately. Food was delicious, large portions enough to share. Drinks were amazing and very well presented. We were served some champagne as well as ice cream! Will definitely be checking out piggy smells later this week. We went there for our Anniversary.
