Ivy and Bean Take the Case by Annie Barrows

So heres the thing: this book embraces the place of not-knowing. That is a hard place for any human to occupy, and Ive read several parents reviews that show how even grown-ups want a definitive answer to the mystery these 2 girls come to accept as unsolved and therefore eternally interesting and a valued jumping-off point for imagination. I appreciate this series tremendously...for poking fun at suburbia and cul-de-sacs, for toying with bigger issues (the connection between global warming & indoorsiness, the tension between structured and unstructured time for developing brains, etc.), and generally promoting free thinking and exploration. Whether youre a kid or not, these are good stories that are interesting to discuss. And my five-year-old and I talk about and reread these again and again. Number 10 is my favorite so far.

Annie Barrows

Reading A-Z resources organized into weekly content-based units and differentiated instruction options. The unlikely duo is back, this time to solve a mystery. After watching an old detective movie with her mother, Bean decides to become a detective herself. All she needs now is a mystery to solve and her best friend, Ivy, to help. Goaded on by other kids in the neighborhood, the two friends discover that each night a mysterious piece of string appears in Pancake Court and grows longer and longer.

Thank you! Donning an old fedora, in no time she attracts the attention of the other neighborhood children, including best friend Ivy. Incredibly, each day it lengthens, sprawling around the cul-de-sac and evidently evading the notice of every adult there. Her efforts to nab Mr. Whoever-ties-the-rope involve lots of shared speculation and a midnight stakeout with loyal Ivy…but no perp. And her nonsolution results in a conclusion that will madden adults but that is wisely, perfectly childlike. There was a problem adding your email address.
