An Artist Teaches: Reflections on the Art of Painting by David A. Leffel

Thoughts at 60 pages in...

What Leffel displays both in words and images here is astounding. It pronounces clarity to the brink of revelation. The clear cut reveal of his thoughts on painting are heavily bound up in his just as exact philosophy.

I feel what is being shared in this book is relative to viewing the world anew. To use Alan Watts quote, like viewing what is as if you didnt know how to talk. The intimacy couldnt be any stronger.

It is an irresistible offering like when someone passes you a smile and says, lets go out there, lets go on an adventure, and lets see what happens. He simply asks that ypu drop what you know (thought you knew) about painting and take a listen.

This excitement is, of course, almost induced by Leffels prose. And I am excited to see what else he has to share with me. it is a delightful experience.

The 40 hours a week of plodding along in the same space is pure anathema to him. Learn a bit about his background and you quickly understand why. Confined to a hospital bed during his youth, Leffel has spent much of his adult life rediscovering the world around him. And yet, irony prevails when it comes to his art. When putting color to canvas, he becomes totally absorbed by the problem-solving process of a painting, often working from early morning through lunch and until the last fleck of natural light has faded from his studio.

Leffel is a painter in the style of early Dutch and Flemish painters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt. His childhood was quite different from most children as he spent eleven years, from the ages of 4 until 15, in the hospital with osteomyelitis, a bone disease. During this time, he developed a love of art expression, especially drawing.

  1. Early on I developed a love of sharing my understanding about painting and in understanding what it means to see like an artist through a study of painting.
