Prologue: The Day my World Changed

Pakistan was created at Midnight and Malala was shot by the Taliban just after Midday. She is ultimately airlifted to Birmingham, UK. Malala’s class had been taking exams on Oct 9, 2012 in the school founded by her father. That morning she had slept late after staying up to study. The exams and threats to her safety are making her anxious. The Taliban is angry about Malala’s public appeals for girls’ rights. No one expects the Taliban to target a young girl. The school bus is stopped on the way home from school. As the shooter asks for Malala, he fires three shots at her. She is shot in the head.

Part One: Before the Taliban
Chapter One: A Daughter is born

Malala is born into the Pashtun culture, where families usually wish for sons. Her father, however, celebrates his daughters birth and is convinced that she is different. He names her after Malalai, a brave young woman who inspired the 19th Century Afghan Army to defeat the British. The young family lives in the Swat Valley, a beautiful mountainous oasis, now considered part of Pakistan. Malalas father is working hard to get ahead and begins a small school. The whole family lives in one room of a small shack, without running water or a kitchen. Over the next seven years, two sons are also born, Khushal (2 years later) and Atal (5 years later). Malala recounts the story of her parents courtship. Most marriages are arranged in Pashtun Society. Theirs was considered a love match and it takes persistence on her fathers part to get her mothers family to agree to the marriage. They are seen as a loving, happy couple. Unlike other husbands, her father views her mother as an equal. At an early age, Malala is more like her father. Shopping at the bazaar is a bore compared with listening to her father speak and learning of her countrys rich history. In the back of her mind is the knowledge that women are expected to stay behind doors. A male relative will need to be present to escort them in public. This is the fate of all young girls as they get older. Malala has decided, already, that this will not be how she will live her life.
