The Secret Self 1: Short Stories by Women by Hermione Lee4.5
I have been reading a story here and there for two months- Ive never stretched a book out like this, generally it drives me nuts, but I savored these shorts, I wasnt in a rush to finish.
By far the best book of shorts Ive read. Its comprised of 32 female authors, of which include, Mansfield, Welty, Rhys, Cather, Stein, OConnor, Monro, Walker, Spark, Carol Oates and Atwood. I was surprised to like the shorts by women whos novels I didnt enjoy like Willa Cather and Dorothy Parker, and others whom Id been told were great but I didnt enjoy Katherine Mansfield and Gertrude Stein, the surprises, Eudora Welty, Nadine Gordimer (whom I hadnt heard of) , Muriel Spark and Ellen Gilcrest, lastly the authors Ive liked and also enjoyed their shorts, Doris Lessing and Angela Carter.
In my experience, books of shorts are inconsistent, one story is great, another is terrible and one might be ok, and on it goes. There were only two stories out of 32 that I didnt enjoy. If Hermione Lee was responsible for choosing the shorts she did s bang up job! The title says The Secret Self 1, I hope theres a 2 and that its equally as good! Highly Recommend!

The Secret is a best-selling self-help book by Rhonda Byrne , based on the earlier film of the same name. It is based on the belief of the law of attraction , which claims that thoughts can change a person's life directly. The Secret was released as a film in March , and later the same year as a book. The book is influenced by Wallace Wattles ' book The Science of Getting Rich , which Byrne received from her daughter during a time of personal trauma in Byrne re-introduces a notion originally popularized by persons such as Madame Blavatsky and Norman Vincent Peale that thinking about certain things will make them appear in one's life. Byrne provides examples of historical persons who have allegedly achieved this.
