Everyone Says I Love You (United States, 1996)
In the past decade, only two live-action, mainstream musical motion pictures have been released. While the first, Little Shop of Horrors , met with some success, the second, Newsies , was a box-office disaster. The poor performance of the Disney-backed film seemed to confirm the common perception that, as a movie genre, the musical was dead. Now, however, as draws to a close, two films are arriving to challenge that belief. The better-known of the pair is, of course, Evita. In Everyone Says I Love You , Allen once again combines these elements, but with a new twist -- this time, instead of relying on standards from the '30s and '40s as background music, he catapults them into the fore.
Many critics have pointed out that the nostalgic movie musical seemed to be all but obsolete in the era of the blockbuster; yet, somewhat surprisingly, in Woody Allen attempted a musical of his own and the result was one of the finer films of his later period. Everyone Says I Love You , released almost exactly 20 years ago, came during a winning run of lighter films for the director after a period of dark, brooding dramas. The central conceit might feel familiar for those who felt Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were not cast primarily for their musical abilities; Allen wanted his actors to have realistic singing voices so that the audience found the characters plausible as ordinary people breaking into song. This is typical Allen fare as the characters journey between Manhattan, Venice and Paris while falling in and out of love. You can find our Community Guidelines in full here. Set in New York City , Venice and Paris , the film features singing by actors not usually known for their singing. Everyone Says I Love You did not do well commercially, but is among the more critically successful of Allen's later films, with Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert even ranking it as one of Allen's best. The emotions of an extended upper-class family in Manhattan are followed in song from NY to Paris and Venice. Various friends, lovers, acquaintances, and relatives act, interact, and sing, in the three cities. These people include young lovers Holden and Skylar in Manhattan; Skylar's parents, Bob and Steffi; Joe, an ex-husband of Steffi; DJ, a daughter from the marriage of Joe and Steffi; Von, a lady whom Joe meets in Venice; and a recently released prison inmate, Charles Ferry, who is inserted between Skyler and Holden, resulting in their breakup. The film takes classic songs and fits them into an updated scenario, and in some cases with unexpected dance routines.
