Here is a movie that had me with a goofy grin plastered on my face for most of its length. A movie that remembers the innocence of the old Hollywood musicals and combines it with one of Allen's funniest and most labyrinthine plots, in which complicated New Yorkers try to recapture the simplicity of first love.

Many critics have pointed out that the nostalgic movie musical seemed to be all but obsolete in the era of the blockbuster; yet, somewhat surprisingly, in Woody Allen attempted a musical of his own and the result was one of the finer films of his later period. Everyone Says I Love You , released almost exactly 20 years ago, came during a winning run of lighter films for the director after a period of dark, brooding dramas. The central conceit might feel familiar for those who felt Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were not cast primarily for their musical abilities; Allen wanted his actors to have realistic singing voices so that the audience found the characters plausible as ordinary people breaking into song. In the past decade, only two live-action, mainstream musical motion pictures have been released. While the first, Little Shop of Horrors , met with some success, the second, Newsies , was a box-office disaster. The poor performance of the Disney-backed film seemed to confirm the common perception that, as a movie genre, the musical was dead. Now, however, as draws to a close, two films are arriving to challenge that belief. The better-known of the pair is, of course, Evita.

Various friends, lovers, acquaintances, and relatives act, interact, and sing, in the three cities. These people include young lovers Holden and Skylar in Manhattan; Skylar's parents, Bob and Steffi; Joe, an ex-husband of Steffi; DJ, a daughter from the marriage of Joe and Steffi; Von, a lady whom Joe meets in Venice; and a recently released prison inmate, Charles Ferry, who is inserted between Skyler and Holden, resulting in their breakup.
