Liars in Love

First with A Good School , his loosely autobiographical novel of life as a teenage boy at a single-sex boarding school, and now with Liars in Love , his second collection of short stories. Once again, Yates demonstrates a deep understanding of the frailties of human nature here. More specifically, he explores the frustrations and disappointments of day-to-day life, the feelings of worthlessness that can stem from small failures, and the lack of connection as promising relationships break down and individuals drift apart. Here we have failing marriages, disparate households, and children who seem detached and isolated from their parents. The collection comprises seven stories each ranging from around 30 to 60 pages in length.

By the time of his death in - extraordinary though it seems - all of his writing had fallen out of both fashion and print. Now, following on from last year's "rediscovery" of Revolutionary Road, his stories have been collected in one satisfyingly fat volume. Yates was in good company in - Catch was another losing finalist in that year's awards. The two books make for an interesting comparison. Heller's novel, occupying the massive stage of the second world war, has a multitude of characters who are trapped in an intricately plotted world.

THOUGH Richard Yates's first collection of short stories, ''Eleven Kinds of Loneliness,'' is now hard to come by, the mere mention of its title is enough to produce quick, affirmative nods from a whole generation of readers. It has become something of a cult book, evoking in one's memory a series of poignant glimpses into the lives of Manhattan office workers, would-be novelists hacking away at lowly trade journals, male residents of New York's outer boroughs more closely bonded to their Friday night drinking buddies than to their yearning and frustrated women. The stories stand up well to a later reading. Man'' - what is almost the New York equivalent of ''Dubliners'': the exposure of the small, fiercely defended dignities and much vaster humiliations of characters who might have been picked almost at random from the fat telephone book of the Borough of Queens. Yates's novels all contain episodes of considerable power, but none of them -not even the widely acclaimed ''Revolutionary Road'' - has had for me the impact of half a dozen stories in ''Eleven Kinds of Loneliness.
