I80 Books however, for the physicist it is still something of a stumbling block. For Goethe, the rich and varied world of colour was not a matter for measurement but was the manifestation of a kind of divine intelligence out of which nature itself, including the eye, was born. It is impossible to understand Goethe unless one concedes at least the possibility of such intuitive understanding. Press, Cuts are indicated. Marginal notes and references are provided throughout and there is a bibliography. Aach in making the translation evidently has been faced with a dilemma.

Johannes Itten 11 November — 25 March was a Swiss expressionist painter , designer, teacher, writer and theorist associated with the Bauhaus Staatliches Bauhaus school. From to he trained as an elementary school teacher. Itten's studies at the Bern-Hofwil Teachers' Academy with Ernst Schneider proved seminal for his later work as a master at the Bauhaus. Itten adopted principles espoused by Schneider, including the practice of not correcting his students' creative work on an individual basis, for fear that this would crush the creative impulse. Rather, he selected certain common mistakes to correct for the class as a whole. From to , Itten taught at the Bauhaus, developing the innovative "preliminary course" [3] which was to teach students the basics of material characteristics, composition, and color.

What would the world be without color? A dull, joyless melange of shapes without vital meaning. As a flame produces light, light produces color. As intonation lends color to the spoken word, color lends spiritually realized sound to form. Over the years numerous color theories have been published: Goethe's theory of color is as famous as Ostwald's color cirlce.
