The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall SmithA lot of people are under the impression that Alexander Mccall Smith books are strictly for middle aged women. This is NOT the case at all. These books are for everyone. They are not even just for women. A lot of people are also under the impression that these books are mystery books. This is also a misconception. Mysteries are a very small part of these stories. These books are about humanity and the small things that make it so good to be both human and alive. I dare anyone who is not happy to read any of these books and not feel a little more hopeful when they finish. But they are not over the top. They are not Chicken Soup for the Soul. They are simply very subtle and very wise. I have recommended this book to countless people who unfortunately do not pick it up for the reasons that I have mentioned above. I have met Alexander Mccall Smith and he is one of the most joyful, intelligent, and interesting people Ive ever encountered. All these qualities come across in his books. Im so glad that hes a writing addict because Im an addict of his books.
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Summary & Study Guide
The No. The novel introduces the Motswana Mma Precious Ramotswe. She hires a secretary and solves cases for her clients. Precious tells her own story, from birth, and her father tells his story. When her father dies, she moves from Mochudi to Gaborone, the capital city, to begin her detective agency. She solves three cases, and meets important new people, her secretary Grace Makutsi and good friend, the excellent mechanic, Mr JLB Matekoni.
The No. This gently paced mystery novel, set in the African country of Botswana, has as its central character the self-sufficient, wise, and compassionate Precious Ramotswe. As the narrative explores the variety of circumstances that enabled her to start her agency and the agency's first cases, it also explores themes relating to the independence of women, African pride, and relationships between parents and children. After summarizing how Mma Ramotswe inherited from her father both the means and the will to make an independent living, and how she used both to start the only detective agency in Botswana run by women, the narrative summarizes her first successful case - how she uncovered the true identity of a man posing as a client's father. The narrative then recounts Mma Ramotswe's past in greater detail - her father's youth and young adulthood working in the mines, the death of her mother, the running of the household by a cousin of her father's, and her marriage to a man who both got her pregnant and abused her. Narration also describes how, after the sudden departure of her husband and the death of her father, Mma Ramotswe bought herself a house, started The No.
