The Jesus I Never Knew by Philip YanceyPhilip Yancey helps reveal what two thousand years of history covered up
What happens when a respected Christian journalist decides to put his preconceptions aside and take a long look at the Jesus described in the Gospels? How does the Jesus of the New Testament compare to the new, rediscovered Jesus or even the Jesus we think we know so well?
Philip Yancey offers a new and different perspective on the life of Christ and his work, his teachings, his miracles, his death and resurrection and ultimately, who he was and why he came. From the manger in Bethlehem to the cross in Jerusalem, Yancey presents a complex character who generates questions as well as answers; a disturbing and exhilarating Jesus who wants to radically transform your life and stretch your faith.
The Jesus I Never Knew uncovers a Jesus who is brilliant, creative, challenging, fearless, compassionate, unpredictable, and ultimately satisfying. ’No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same’, says Yancey. ‘Jesus has rocked my own preconceptions and has made me ask hard questions about why those of us who bear his name don t do a better job of following him.’

This is indeed a day when novel ideas about Jesus are frequent and fashionable, but far from correcting those errors, this book only serves to make them even more acute. The book is neatly packaged into three sections. Yancey makes the grandiose and hackneyed claim in The Jesus I Never Knew that he is doing something new and daring. He is, he claims, attempting to go straight to the source, to see Jesus as He was before being dirtied up by all the traditions of the church though one is puzzled by his inordinate reliance on fifteen movies about the life of Jesus to make his case. Yancey is, as it were, our guide, leading us into a secret knowledge that has been previously known only to God. What strikes me as ironic, though, as I read this book is that there is nothing new here at all.

The Jesus I Never Knew Small Group Bible Study by Philip Yancey - Trailer
Yancey begins his book with a look at the Jesus he learned about in church in his childhood years. He then describes how his view of Jesus changes over the years as he matures and as he has different experiences with Jesus and the people who claim to be Jesus' followers. It is a result of these confusing experiences that Yancey decides to try to strip away all the layers of bias that the church and the followers of Jesus add to His life and message. Next, Yancey continues with a study of Jesus' message to His followers. He concentrates mainly on the message of the Sermon on the Mount, hoping to dispel some confusion found in Jesus' teachings.
