Inside the Wardrobe of Anne Boleyn by Barbara Parker Bell

In this book, we examine Anne Boleyn’s wardrobe in relation to the chronology of her lifetime because—luckily for us—we have records of Annes clothes at every stage of her life. From her glittering debut in the Chateau Vert pageant to her final walk to the scaffold, everything is right there in the historical record. We may never know what Anne Boleyn truly looked like, but we can peek into her coffers and chests to admire her furs, velvets, satins and damasks, her headdresses, girdles and slippers—even her nightgowns—allowing us to effectively re-imagine the clothes worn by this fascinating queen, and to re-imagine the woman herself.

Sit comfortably in your armchair and take a cup of tea; you are about to experience the story of Englands most controversial Queen consort from a very intimate perspective.

This bill covers the period from 20 January April and includes items of dress for Queen Anne and the Princess Elizabeth, with a few articles for the court jester, Will Sommers. What I find fascinating about the account is that it paints a clear picture of the kinds of luxurious gowns that Anne wore and had made for her daughter. The notes at the end of the account are helpful when it comes to reading the account and defining some of the terms used. Read the full account here. There were eight nightgowns, two embroidered and another in russet trimmed with miniver; and three cloaks — of black Bruges satin, of embroidered tawny satin and of black cloth lined with black sarcenet — while Arnold the shoemaker had eight lots of black velvet to make shoes and slippers. How I would love someone to do so!
