Problem solving

Problem solving consists of using generic or ad hoc methods in an orderly manner to find solutions to problems. Some of the problem-solving techniques developed and used in philosophy , artificial intelligence , computer science , engineering , mathematics , or medicine are related to mental problem-solving techniques studied in psychology. The term problem solving means slightly different things depending on the discipline. For instance, it is a mental process in psychology and a computerized process in computer science. There are two different types of problems, ill-defined and well-defined: different approaches are used for each. Well-defined problems have specific goals and clear expected solutions, while ill-defined problems do not.

The first is defining the problem that you're trying to solve, and the second is actually setting out to solve it. It sounds pretty intuitive, but I think that first step usually receives short shrift. In my experience, people are so geared up to get in there, roll up their sleeves, and come up with ideas, that they forget to really set the stage and understand why a client even needs their help in the first place. What is their marketplace situation like? How is their business performing? All effective problem solving starts with effective problem defining.

This page continues working through the stages of problem solving as laid out in: Problem Solving - An Introduction. This page provides detailed information on 'Stage Three' of the problem solving process - finding possible solutions to problems. In group situations this involves finding ways to actively involve everybody - encouraging participation and generating as many ideas and possible solutions as possible. Brainstorming is perhaps one of the most commonly used techniques for generating a large number of ideas in a short period of time. Whilst it can be done individually, it is more often practised in groups.

How you deal with challenges will often determine your success and happiness. Choose whether to approach the problem logically or whether you should think about how the outcome might make you feel. Find ways to creatively approach your problems by working with other people and approaching the problem from a different perspective.

  1. The statement that a proposal is a solution in search of problem is made sometimes when a person proposes a change that others see as not worth the bother of implementing.
