What is Christian Counseling versus Secular Counseling?

When going out into the community to let folks know about Mimosa Christian Counseling Center, the question often comes up regarding the differences between secular and Christian counseling. There are many differences, but there are several primary ones. One of the primary differences is in the desired result. In secular counseling, the desired result is primarily related to increasing the ability of a person to function more effectively or to become more emotionally stable. In Christian counseling, the primary goal is to enable the person to heal in order that they are able to interact with God effectively, and to be able to utilize their gifting in the body of Christ.
There are some Christians who disagree that the Bible should be used to help us solve our counseling-related problems. Christians who rely—to one degree or another—on the counseling insights of secular people have been called integrationists, Christian counselors, and Christian psychologists—among other things. I want to show how the decision to be a Christian counselor is a theological decision. In order to do that, I will describe areas where biblical counselors agree with our brothers and sisters in Christian counseling, as well as some areas where we disagree. Biblical counselors and Christian counselors have had their fair share of disagreements over the years. First, biblical counselors and Christian counselors have, for the most part, been located in Christian circles marked by conservatism.

Christian Counseling - The Differences As a general rule, both Christian counseling and secular counseling share the same desire to help people overcome their problems, find meaning and joy in life, and become healthy and well-adjusted individuals, both mentally and emotionally. Most counselors have graduate degrees and have spent years learning their craft. The word "counseling" can have multiple meanings, including offering advice and encouragement, sharing wisdom and skills, setting goals, resolving conflict, etc. Counselors usually probe the past whether the problem happened a week ago or during childhood in an attempt to repair the present. Sometimes they explore possible affects of physical and chemical imbalances that can cause physiological problems. A major part of counseling is resolving and restoring conflicts between people.
