Transformers: Dark of the Moon
The Transformers franchise is arguably at once both the most simplistic and most complicated franchise in all of movie history. At its base, Transformers is a franchise based on Hasbro toys that feature massive mechanical aliens that fight each other to shreds. On their home planet of Cybertron, there are two opposing factions: the Autobots and the Decepticons. The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, are fighting to prevent the Decepticons led by Megatron from getting the AllSpark, a powerful artifact that would grant unlimited power to whoever possesses it. Determined not to allow the evil Megatron to get ahold of it, Optimus Prime sends the AllSpark into space. He is discovered in by explorer Archibald Witwicky, who unknowingly activates Megatron.
Did you watch Michael Bay's newest cinematic aberration this weekend and come away confused? Yes, including the one about statutory rape, since Michael Bay decided to bring it up. Because Michael Bay has somehow perfected his technique of turning a major summer action movie blockbuster into a high school graduation. It's three long hours of things happening that you don't care about. Oh, sure, eventually the person you're there to see will be called to the stage likely this student's name is Grimlock and you'll be excited to see him get his moment of recognition, and then the rest of these goddamn kids you don't know or care about have to get their diploma too. Even though Transformers 4 has less of certain problems that have plagued the live-action franchise, watching it is an obligation, a joyless, interminable slog where all you do is wait for Grimlock to get his diploma, metaphorically speaking, and go home and have a beer.
The series exists to show gigantic and hideous robots hammering one another. So it does. The last hour involves a battle for the universe which for some reason is held at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive in Chicago. This battle is protracted mercilessly beyond all reason, at an ear-shattering sound level, with incomprehensible Autobots and Decepticons sliced up into spurts of action with no sense of the space they occupy. There is more of a plot this time.
