The Law and the Prophets: A Study in Old Testament Canon Formation by Stephen B. ChapmanThis watershed book by a leading Old Testament scholar presents an alternative perspective in the ongoing debate about the formation of the Hebrew Bible. It marshals all of the important counterarguments to the standard theory of Old Testament canon formation, showing how the Pentateuch and the Prophets developed more or less simultaneously and mutually influenced each other over time. The widely praised European edition is now available in North America with an updated bibliography and a new postscript reflecting on how the study of the Old Testament canon has developed over the last twenty years.
"The Law and the Prophets" With Curry Blake
In every division of the Old Testament scriptures, the law always refers to the five books of Moses known as the Pentateuch: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. However, there are different answers to what books are considered the prophets. This first five books in this series Isaiah through Daniel are called the Major Prophets and the last twelve books Hosea through Malachi are called the Minor Prophets. It is important that we understand the meaning of major and minor in this context. Originally, major referred to that which was larger or of greater quantity and minor referred to that which was smaller or of less quantity.
Isa To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. The above verses considered collectively show that the law and the testimony are both God's word, they are truth, and they are bound and sealed among God's true people. The next verse explains a little more about what God's testimony is:. Neh Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations. It is the prophets of the Lord that give God's testimony to the people.
What does the Bible say about? Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.
