The Road to Gobblers Knob: From Chile to Alaska on a Motorbike by Geoff HillI bought this on the back of a previous bike trip that Geoff Hill written about a ride from India bringing tea home. A good pace and hardly comparable to any truck driving epic. The focus is on riding a motorcycle and the trials of the mode of transport.
Humorous and simply a good tale.
Update October 2017.
Re-read the book as holiday reading. I always have it with me. Not the tattered dog eared paperback to rival the bible hidden in hotel bedside table, but on my Kindle.
Next up. In Clancys Boots
Full of humour and travelogue this is a tremendous book to read for the armchair adventure biker. Live the drama from the comfort of your own home or indeed a holiday home in surety that come the end of the day you wont be knackered and not suffered on the seat of a bike all day....
Geoff Hill. A god amongst motorcycling authors. P.S. Little g so not to upset anyone.

It's Metafilter's 20th anniversary! To celebrate, scan some cats or help fund Mefi! I need advice on how to go about this using the least amount of money, and in the safest way manageable. Background: I am an 18 year old college student on a limited budget living in D. What I'd like to do: Fly up to Alaska, obtain a cheap, sturdy, small 4-wheel drive vehicle, and drive south until I run out of land. I also need a way to transport the car back up to the states container ship? Driving through some more unstable parts of the world seems unavoidable ahem, Colombia

It sounded brilliant. - Without an all-terrain vehicle, it is necessary to circumnavigate this terrestrial stretch by sea. The Pan-American Highway passes through many diverse climates and ecological types, from dense jungles, to arid deserts, to barren tundra, some of which are passable only during the dry season, and in many regions driving is occasionally hazardous.
We — the Vogel family from Boise, Idaho — did it. Eight years ago, John and Nancy Vogel left their teaching jobs, took their twin boys out of school, bought two single bikes and a tandem and embarked on a journey to cycle the Pan-American Highway. The highway comprises official and unofficial sections. The official section runs from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico to Buenos Aires, Argentina, while the unofficial sections can be found to both the north and south of the official route. However, if you are thinking in cycling or driving all the way down until Ushuaia without stopping — except to rest, sleep or eat — take that out of your mind.
